Having posted a picture of my father at about the same age, this posting seemed only fair.
While there is much about this painting I could improve, I got the expression in the eyes exactly right.
I like the way you painted this portrait. I know what you mean by your comment about your watercolor of your dad . . . to find a way to combine realism with abstract or undone areas in oils. I look at Carolyn Anderson's website periodically. She applies oil paints in such a sketchy way yet achieves realism while a lot of the canvas remains uncovered. It has that airiness of watercolor.
