Creative Coloring in Portraits

"Josey"
Acrylic on Paper, 16x20," c. Catherine Vines

This is a friend from the Seattle area. Josey is a painter in her own right and well as a genius at selecting matting and framing to best portray a painting.
While the painting looks like her, it fails to show her lovely smile.
I wonder why I am so much more creative with colors when I am using acrylics. I love the feel (and even smell) of oil paints, but would like to expand my color range within a painting.
Practice. Practice. Practice.

The Missing Tooth

"The Missing Tooth"
Oil on canvas, 4x6," c. Catherine Vines

Another of my portraits of children.  I especially love the freshness of the painting. It doesn't hurt that the subject is one of the favorites either!
Recently I have been reading an article by Gabor George Burt on the relationship between creativity and childhood play. I think this portrait captures that playfulness, both on the part of the child and the artist.
